What is now Castle Rock Jewelers began as an overgrown hobby in 1995 as a direct result of one of the owners being a late-night-cable-junkie hooked on a gemstone show. After nearly a year of buying gemstones and stuffing them into a file drawer, Lonnie peeked in the overflowing drawer and asked Ron what he intended to do with them. He told her he was going to put them in little jars and display them.

Here’s where his tactful and very supportive wife responded, “Well that’s kind of stupid.” Somehow he found this statement both offensive and challenging and declared that he would make jewelry. Ron went to work teaching himself how to do just that. Early pieces were simple creations in silver. After a few months, he had a box full of pretty rings and some pendants. Lonnie wanted to take them to her office to see if anyone else thought they were as beautiful as she believed them to be. ( See — Very Supportive! ) Each piece had natural gemstones and was priced at no more than $50.00. The goal was to make nice pieces affordable, and it worked. That first foray of displaying Ron’s handiwork from her desk resulted in a total sellout and requests for more. Everyone loved getting REAL jewelry at costume jewelry prices.

By the time Ron retired from the corporate world five years later, we were doing quarterly trunk shows at offices and craft shows on weekends. The business grew in baby steps. It was two years before anything was set in gold, and another two years to setting diamonds. Ron took a couple of classes to learn repair work and casting. Lonnie learned how to make wax models and started designing custom pieces.

In 2002, we opened a permanent weekend shop at the Great Colorado Marketplace in Loveland, CO. We continued to do a handful of craft shows and expanded to conventions and conferences across the U.S. In August of 2005, we decided to bring our love of colored gemstones and fine design to Castle Rock.
